Often, excuses like ‘I am too busy’, ‘I have no time on my hands’ or ‘too much trouble’ justify our not cooking at home more often. I am guilty of this too sometimes. Especially when the commitments of the day are overwhelming (which is all too often lately) and I return home dead tired. The last place I want to be is in the kitchen. If only the prep work for cooking a meal is fuss free and can be over in minutes! Wouldn’t that encourage us to spend more time in the kitchen? And wouldn’t it then provide our families good, wholesome and healthy meals?
For some reason, after all this time, I have stuck to manual chopping, pounding and shredding. Why? I do not know really. Perhaps it’s habit or I’m gadget-phobic, which is not likely. Whatever the reason may be it’s sure time to evolve!
I have to say that my heart skipped when I first laid eyes on the lovely blue box with cheeky Jamie Oliver peering at me. I’ve been an ardent fan of his TV shows and cookbooks as far back as I can remember. I watched him grow up as I have these passing years. There is something about Jamie’s effortless preparation of food that I marvel at. He makes it seem so easy! Using his hands, he licks and slurps whilst constantly bouncing about (never really stationary) in the kitchen and occasionally breaks out in a spontaneous dance! Watching him work is entertainment at its best for a foodie home chef!
And now .. I have him in my kitchen! Woooo!! *winks*
With girlie excitement, I carefully unbox my new Philips Jamie Oliver Food Processor. What greets me in the next few minutes got me ooo-ing and ahhh-ing! Look at the white and pretty blue accented Food Processor and all the accessories included!
There is the,
1. Innovative serrated knife for quick frozen desserts
Making frozen desserts with this is excellent! Crushing ice cubes with the serrated knife is a breeze!
2. Adjustable slicing disc for thin to thick slices (1 – 7mm)
Love the ability to adjust the disc to achieve various thickness for your apples, potatoes etc.
3. Reversible shredding disc (fine or coarse)
This handy tool ensures that your onions, carrots, cabbage and potatoes are grated in seconds!
4. Metal double balloon beater for egg whites and cream
Create fluffy egg whites and perfect whipped cream for delicious desserts!
5. Citrus juicer for fresh orange and grapefruit juice
Get your fruit juices freshly pressed!
I must add that Philips with Jamie Oliver got it all thought out with what home chefs need and have put in a lot of care into its new offering.
The first thing that turned me on was the ability of the processor to prepare ice cream! I’ve been contemplating getting an ice cream machine for years but never really got to it so this was an AWESOME proposition! I have seen Jamie’s YouTube video where he made mango ice cream with his processor in mere minutes and was determined to give it a shot. So I got to work!
Now fate has it that mangoes are in season. Timely yes? Most definitely! Nearly every wet market, supermarket, fruit stall and even pop-up fruit stalls at the back of vans are stocking it up. I got mine at a Pasar Malam fruit stall.
Cutting the beautifully ripe mangoes into cubes, and then zip-locking them into a bag for freezing. (You can do this in advance. Especially handy when you chance upon gorgeous mangoes when being out and about).
Now the exciting part! Place the serrated knife accessory into the food processor and empty the bag of pre-frozen mangoes right into it. Blitz away!
Pause when the cubes have been crushed as shown.
Add the yogurt, honey and grated lime zest. I left the mint leaves out as the 3 supermarkets I went to were all out-of-stock (think its time to start growing my own!)
Then, leave the processor to blitz away until a smooth consistency is reached.
Turn the beautiful yellow dessert into a pre-freeze bowl and cover with cling wrap until ready to serve. Or if you are unable to resist, scoop up a ball for yourself, assemble on an ice cream cone and grate chocolate over to garnish. (Another way to serve this is to pour the mixture into popsicle moulds to make healthy after-school treats for the young ones).
Ta-Dah!! Oh so yummy!!
Verdict : Turns out you don’t need an ice cream maker to make a delicious frozen dessert! What a kitchen helper this is! Love it! Can’t wait to see what else this machine can churn out in double quick time!
It’s the end of the day, the family is adequately satiated, there are smiles all around and I have more time on my hands to read my children a bedtime story. Bliss! Thank you Philips!
